Tips for Working from Home
I’ll be adding simple tips here to help you successfully work at home. Some will be much harder to do during the pandemic lockdown, but it’s still work keeping them in mind. Perhaps you can adapt them to your own circumstances to help you cope with the current challenges.
Managing remote workers
If you’re an experienced manager who always tries to follow good management practices, then you will have successfully adapted to the sudden challenge of managing most of your people remotely. Here are some thoughts to keep in mind as you adapt to having more of your people working from home.
Top of the list of factors for successful Working From Home is Communication. Open, honest two-way communication! Don’t forget to find ways to facilitate the informal stuff too, maybe chats over coffee or virtual lunches. Concentrate on active listening, so you’ll hear what’s not said as well as what is. Don’t be fooled by “I’m fine”, seek more, then you are more likely to identify those who are struggling. Constantly evaluate your management style and try to be flexible. Do you usually judge performance on how many hours they put in? Is that really the best way? Maybe your most successful employee is the one who reaches the goal in the least time. Micro managing the hours your people work is difficult when they are Working From Home, so try to focus on and reward achievements rather than time inputs.
